Use of the B+W 486 leads to sharper and clearer images, since without the filter so-called ghost images caused by IR radiation and the relatively high sensitivity of the camera sensors in this bandwidth have a negative influence on image sharpness.

How does the clever B+W 486 UV-IR barrier filter work?
More than 30 interference coatings are vapor deposited on one side, while the opposite side is MRC-coated. The steep rising edge* of the B+W 486 ensures that all UV radiation is filtered out while rays in the visible wavelength range can pass through almost completely. The steep falling edge* at the transition to the near infrared range blocks interfering long wave radiation.

Multi-Resistant Coating - Harder than Glass
MRC (Multi-Resistant Coating) by B+W is not only an extraordinarily effective multiple layer coating, it is also harder than glass, so that it protects filters from scratches (for instance when cleaning the filters), and it is also water and dirt repellent, thus facilitating filter maintenance.
Not suitable for lenses wider than 35mm
The B+W 486 UV/IR filter is not suitable for lenses with an angle of view of more than 60 because the thin layer technology will lead to a change in light colour towards blue.
